Ayala Malls is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability by implementing advanced chilled water systems. These systems, which use chilled water plants to absorb excess heat from buildings, provide consistent cooling. Instead of relying solely on fresh municipal water, Ayala Malls has adopted water recycling initiatives to conserve water and minimize environmental impact, making their cooling systems sustainable and eco-friendly.
Through a dedicated sewage treatment plant, Ayala Malls treats wastewater from sinks, restrooms, toilets, and merchants’ kitchens. This treated water is then reused in cooling towers, helping to keep the malls cool.
By recycling water, Ayala Malls not only minimizes pollution and environmental impact but also reduces its carbon footprint by saving energy and resources needed for fresh water. This ensures a reliable water supply even during summer or water shortages.
This approach also helps Ayala Malls meet Green Building Standards like LEED and comply with government water conservation regulations. It cuts down on water consumption and costs. Plus, it lowers maintenance costs and reduces breakdowns in cooling systems by decreasing scaling and corrosion.
Beyond water conservation, Ayala Malls is also committed to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy. Ayala Malls’ partnership with Chop Value Philippines recycles used chopsticks from the Malls’ food courts into furniture and other pieces. In just 8 months, the program has recycled over 4.7 million pieces of chopsticks and repurposed them into coffee and side tables, wooden trays, and rustic drink coasters.
The company also works with Green Trident to keep waste from landfills through a circular waste management disposal system where clean, dry plastics are recycled and repurposed into Poly AL Pro boards, an eco-friendly alternative to wood and cement, and Papel ni Juan for multi-use bond papers. In 2024, over 32,000 clean dry plastics have been collected, and 2025 is off to an amazing start, with 15,000 plastics collected in the first 2 months.
