If the home is the universe, then the refrigerator would be the sun. Everything revolves around it—from breakfasts to lunches, and dinners around the table. And since the pandemic last year, we have been spending long hours indoors, doing a lot more cooking at home than dining out. Given this new “new normal,’ refrigeration is all about keeping our perishables fresh. The refrigerator is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the kitchen for keeping food safe.

Refrigerators have long been perceived as the boxy and boring behemoths of the kitchen, and buying one used to be simple as choosing between eggshell and off-white. Times have changed. In the last decade, manufacturers have shifted their focus on getting creative and putting more ‘gadgetry’ with the way they think about this appliance. Refrigerators are getting a huge upgrade this 2021 with a variety of features designed to bring a whole new level of functionality.

When you have a fridge that maintains its temperatures and humidity electronically, then you can count on the freshness of its contents. We all want to get the vitamins from fruits and vegetables that will boost our immune system, promoting a healthier heart and brain function, and providing natural antioxidants to protect us from getting sick. But did you know that they lose it from the moment they are harvested up to the time they are consumed?

Europe’s number one appliance brand Beko recently launched their patented HarvestFresh technology in their selected refrigerators. Let’s get downright what is HarvestFresh, shall we? Inspired by nature and powered by light, this innovative technology uses light inside the refrigerator in three colors—blue, green, and red—that mimics the 24-hour sun cycle and natural sunlight. This technology helps fruits and vegetables maintain their nutrition and crispness from the day they were bought or harvested.

Here’s how it works. In the first four hours of the HarvestFresh cycle, the crisper lights will turn blue simulating dawn or the first light of day. This followed by green replicating midday and finally six hours of red lighting imitating dusk before the lights shut off for 12 hours representing nighttime.

The field of food storage has evolved quite a bit with technological advances like Beko’s HarvestFresh by extending the freshness of produce. Say goodbye to food spoilage, rotting fruits and vegetables that cause stinky odor, and the frustration of finding the broccoli hiding amid the crisper.
