Altro Mondo Arte Contemporanea is pleased to present its fifth year of Rondo from December 4 to January 2 at the Altro Mondo Creative Space Gallery (1159 Chino Roces Avenue, San Antonio Village, Makati City).
Music has the power to replicate the passage of time with its peaks and valleys of tension and release, the rhythm of a piece mimicking the steady continuity of life delineated by sections and notes that distinguish significant events. As with our memories, a chord suspended by itself gains meaning by what comes before and after it, existing as part of a larger whole.
It’s fitting, then, that Altro Mondo’s annual year-end exhibition is entitled Rondo, seeing as visual art can do what music can by way of an exhibit. Rondo is a musical form found in the last movement of a musical piece. As such, the works included in the exhibit are in constant dialogue with each other, coming together to punctuate the space with meaning and memories of a year that is coming to an end.
The exhibit features an exceptional roster of Filipino talent, whose work encompasses myriad styles and themes, laid out like the finest of Mozart’s compositions. Orley Ypon‘s Life and Nature is a snapshot of provincial idyll, with frenzied brushstrokes depicting otherwise tranquil pastoral beauty, a scene of traditional family life emerging in the background. Tammy de Roca‘s Vergel’s Golt is a similar chronicle of the natural world in which she seizes the tumult of the sea in thick impasto waves.
In contrast to this, Phyllis Zaballero‘s Window Whimsy #5 is true to its name. The work is a playful hodgepodge of neon colors and odd silhouettes straight out of a bygone era. Antipas Delotavo‘s Elixir is another fanciful excursion from convention, which sees a man caught between a random assortment of floating paraphernalia: a sewing machine, perfume bottles, and a clock.
These are just some of the brilliant artists and artworks included in this year-end exhibition that showcases a sampling of the country’s most gifted contemporary artists, bound by their passion to push the envelope and break new ground in the world of contemporary art. Their works, though diverse and dissimilar from each other, all come together to form a harmonious conclusion to the outgoing year and a hopeful glimpse into the future ahead.
Rondo V will be on view at the Altro Mondo Creative Space (1159 Chino Roces Avenue, San Antonio Village, Makati City) until January 2, 2022. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm.
