Dhiraagu, the largest digital and telecommunications service provider in the Maldives, has been awarded the Broadband Telecom Company of the Year – Maldives at the Asian Telecom Awards 2024. The award recognizes businesses and initiatives that have driven progress in the telecom industry and reshaped the digital landscape. Dhiraagu has invested significantly in digitally connecting the Maldives, a dispersed island nation in the Indian Ocean.

Despite the geographical challenges, Dhiraagu has established a comprehensive digital backbone across the nation with a 1253-kilometre submarine cable from the North to the South of Maldives as well as two fibre optic submarine cable systems between Sri Lanka and the Maldives, connecting the country to the international gateway.

The company provides 4G mobile broadband coverage to 100% of the archipelagic population whilst its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service is available to 94% of national households. Dhiraagu has also made 5G services available to half of the population by the end of 2023, being the first company to launch commercial 5G services in the Maldives and South Asia in 2019.

Meanwhile, Dhiraagu has also entered into a contract with a consortium of 13 global telecom and tech companies to connect Maldives to the global super high-way SEA-ME-WE 6 (SMW6) submarine cable system which will connect Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe at eleven countries from Singapore to France.

 

The cable system is expected to provide Maldives direct access to key Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) at multiple locations across the world, helping to reduce latency, improve quality, and reduce costs of Dhiraagu’s internet services. This key investment is expected to boost the overall resiliency and performance of the internet infrastructure in the Maldives, further supporting the socioeconomic development of the country.

In line with this existing digital network, Dhiraagu also has a comprehensive portfolio for their customers with special mobile and fibre broadband packages to meet the needs of residential customers as well as large-scale organisations, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the government sector.

Its remarkable services and enhancements have led the Maldives to strengthen its digital connectivity, enabling their customers to enjoy high-speed services and meet the increasing data needs of the digital age.
