Heng Hiap Industries Sdn Bhd (HHI) has won the Emerging Technology – Manufacturing category at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2024 for its innovative digital transformation of mechanical and chemical recycling processes. This initiative reduces ocean-bound plastics and represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future, combining innovative technology with a commitment to environmental conservation. HHI’s approach has catalyzed a cohesive ecosystem within the recycling industry.

At the heart of HHI’s innovative streak is the Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) initiative, which converts collected OBP into high-quality, certified recycled polypropylene (rPP), verified by the Control Union under the Zero Plastic Oceans (ZPO) standard. This scalable innovation is a testament to HHI’s capability and showcases an integrated, traceable solution for premium plastic recycling. Launched in 2020, this initiative facilitated collaboration with KIAN Furniture to produce the award-winning Louvre chair, symbolizing a deep commitment to plastic circularity. The innovation continued; in 2021, HHI partnered with the globally recognised petrochemical giant SABIC for the chemical recycling of mixed and used OBP scrap. This collaboration birthed certified circular polymers used in packaging labels, expanding the horizons of recycling capabilities. Meanwhile, 2022 saw the launch of the SmartSkrap app, a keystone in HHI’s digital transformation. This app has revolutionized the traceability of OBP and Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) collection, fostering a collaborative ecosystem involving consumers, recyclers, schools, NGOs, and fishermen. This digital platform has significantly broadened the scope and impact of HHI’s circular innovations. |
|
HHI’s efforts have led to partnerships with over 28,000 independent recyclers, setting industry standards and utilizing advanced technologies such as Near Infra Red (NIR) and De-odorised Technology to transform PCR scrap into certified, traceable hygiene-grade materials. This initiative not only addresses critical industry challenges but also significantly contributes to the fight against the mismanaged leakage of PCR plastics into marine and riverine environments. HHI’s vision of traceability and sustainability is further enhanced by incorporating the Science-Based Targets initiatives (SBTi) and blockchain technology into its SmartSkrap app, providing a solid foundation for its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments. HHI’s flexible and adaptable approach allows it to scale its initiatives effectively, ensuring long-term success in creating a sustainable recycling ecosystem. |

The achievements of HHI, including the collaboration with KIAN Furniture for the Louvre chair and SABIC for chemical recycling, alongside the SmartSkrap app’s development, demonstrate HHI’s unwavering dedication to innovation and sustainability. These accomplishments underscore HHI’s pivotal role in driving the industry towards a more sustainable future through technological advancement.
