Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, a pioneer in lifestyle malls, was recognized at the ESG Business Awards 2024 for its innovative sustainability efforts. The company won the Smart City Award for its township development, Eastwood City, and the Sustainable Infrastructure Award for launching the first all-inclusive EV charging stations under its Park, Charge, Drive initiative. These awards were held at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.
Megaworld’s Eastwood City won the Smart City Award for its pioneering live-work-play model. As the first “15-minute city” in the Philippines, Eastwood City integrates residential, commercial, and recreational spaces within a compact, walkable environment, reducing the need for vehicle use and minimizing carbon emissions. Its design promotes walking and cycling through well-connected pathways and green spaces, setting a benchmark for smart urban living.
The integrated approach has influenced the real estate and retail sectors, establishing Eastwood City as a blueprint for developers and mall operators in the Philippines. Integrating residential, commercial, and recreational spaces fosters a thriving ecosystem, reinforcing Eastwood City’s status as a forward-thinking urban model capable of adapting to changing times.
“This award reflects our commitment to creating future-ready urban spaces where technology, sustainability, and community coexist,” said Graham Coates, First Vice President and Head of Megaworld Lifestyle Malls.
Megaworld Lifestyle Malls also bagged the Sustainable Infrastructure Award for its groundbreaking “Park, Charge, Drive” initiative. This project established the Philippines’ first all-inclusive EV charging stations across significant Megaworld properties, which were launched in 2022 and included Eastwood City, Uptown Bonifacio, Forbes Town, and Arcovia City. These state-of-the-art stations support a wide range of electric vehicles – from e-bikes, e-scooters, e-jeepneys, and e-vehicles – promoting green transportation and reducing carbon emissions.
The project was launched in collaboration with leading private organizations, including the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP), and government agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Natural Resources (DENR). Park, Charge, Drive is also supported by PGA Cars, Power Equipment and Supplies, Inc. (PESIN), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.
Since its inception, “Park, Charge, Drive” has serviced over 4,000 vehicles, resulting in an estimated savings of more than Php 1 million in fuel expenses. This initiative addresses the growing demand for EV infrastructure and sets a new standard for sustainable urban development.
Megaworld Lifestyle Mall’s success at the ESG Business Awards 2024 highlights its long-standing commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. By integrating innovative technology and sustainability, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls continues to create future-forward, eco-conscious shopping destinations.
“We are deeply honored by these awards, which validate our ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and innovation in our developments. We believe that true progress lies in creating spaces that positively impact the environment and society,” added Coates.
As the company looks ahead, it remains focused on expanding its portfolio of intelligent, sustainable projects, continuing to shape a greener future for urban spaces and their communities.
