A feat in Montblanc writing instrument craftsmanship befitting the design and performance of the new Daytona SP3, the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 Limited Edition marks the latest chapter in the partnership between writing instrument pioneer Montblanc and automotive legend Ferrari.
Co-designed under the direction of Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari Chief Design Officer, the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 Limited Edition 599 leans into the unmistakable Ferrari style lexicon to create a brand-new shape of Montblanc writing instrument. The Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 pays homage to the design DNA that makes every Ferrari car recognisable – the architecture and proportions, the surfaces, volumes and aerodynamics. This DNA is also known as a stilema, referring to the instantly recognizable element in a design that reveals its identity and creator.
“While a writing instrument has a completely different function and construction to a car, our aim was to create a writing instrument that perfectly aligned with the philosophy and design language of the Prancing Horse, even before its technical qualities were revealed. Together with Flavio, we have defined a new family of writing instruments that seamlessly merge both identities, pushing boundaries of design and innovation within our respective industries,” says Nicolas Baretzki, Montblanc CEO.
A reinterpretation of the timeless design of iconic Ferraris using innovative materials and state-of-the-art technology, the Icona series is among the most exclusive Ferrari collections. The second car to join the limited edition Icona range is the Daytona SP3 with a name that evokes the legendary 1-2-3 finish at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1967, one of the most spectacular feats in Ferrari history. The newest Icona is an homage to the prototypes that earned the marque its unparalleled motor sport status.
The Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 expresses the car’s fluid shape through the use of a single material for the cap and barrel: light titanium, rarely seen in Montblanc writing instruments. The angle of the cap top mimics the way the Ferrari Daytona SP3’s nose slices through the air, while the lined accents on the forepart and barrel are derived from the blades on the car’s bumpers, where lines create a visual game of light and dark with bars that seem to disappear.
While the outside design is distinctly Ferrari, the ‘engine’ of the pen is assuredly Montblanc. The heart of the Ferrari Daytona SP3 is its growling V12 engine; in the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3, a handcrafted Au 750 solid white gold nib and hidden filling mechanism drive a different kind of petrol through its veins – ink. Expertly made by hand in over 30 steps, the Montblanc nib is an expression of time- honoured craftsmanship, while the newly positioned ink filling mechanism expresses Montblanc and Ferrari’s shared innovative spirit.
Inspired by the Ferrari Design engineering vision, the ink filling mechanism in the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 has been structured in a way that is new to Montblanc’s repertoire, complimenting the writing instrument’s sleek silhouette. Embodying the light lines of the Ferrari Daytona SP3, this ink filling mechanism has been hidden beneath a red, semi-transparent blade slashing through the titanium barrel. Crafted in solid white gold for this edition, the mechanism can only be revealed by pulling the blade back. Once the tank is full of ink and the blade locked back in place, the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 is primed for the starting line and ready to write.
The solid Au750 white gold nib features a special “SP3” engraving, and the iconic Ferrari Prancing Horse is also lasered on the cap. The Montblanc emblem that sits per tradition on the cap top is similarly crafted of solid Au750 white gold.
“It was a fascinating design challenge to translate the proportions and fluidity of the Daytona SP3, ideally contoured for dynamic performance and incredible speeds, to a writing instrument without sacrificing on the quality of the writing experience. Our focus was not only on fluidity of the form but also of function, emphasizing the exceptional sensation of holding a high-calibre fountain pen. Not only is the ink fluid, but the pen supports the rapid movements of the hand as it writes, allowing thoughts to flow unimpeded,“ explains Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari Chief Design Officer.
Just like the car that inspired this unexpected design, the writing instrument is limited to just 599 pieces worldwide. The Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 is the second writing instrument to be released under the collaboration of the two iconic names in the luxury arena following the introduction of the Montblanc Great Characters Enzo Ferrari Edition, a writing tribute to the great pioneer and visionary founder of the prestigious Ferrari automobile marque.
