Meet the Marimekko designers:
Maija Isola (1927–2001) began her career in 1949 as a fabric designer at Marimekko’s predecessor, Printex, and continued for 38 years. She designed more than 500 patterns for Marimekko, laying the foundation for the company as a print house. She lived an unconventional life for her time, painting what she encountered while traveling across Europe, North Africa, and America, creating many patterns and color pallets in the process.
Meanwhile, Pentti Rinta joined Marimekko in 1969 as a fashion designer. He remained with the company until 1987, designing many bold and colorful Marimekko prints. In the 1970s, Pentti’s work at Marimekko was featured in fashion magazines worldwide.
Moreover, Japanese designer Katsuji Wakisaka created several patterns for Marimekko from 1968 to 1976, and again in 2001. His designs are characterized by a playful approach to pattern composition, and a vivid and dynamic color palette.
Lastly, Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi worked at Marimekko from 1953 to 1960. The architectural, clean lines of her designs transformed the conventional perception of fashion in the 1950s. Her most renowned designs include timeless classics such as the Jokapoika shirt (1956), Marimekko’s longest continuously produced garment.
