If you still haven’t left your cave, one of the exciting things you should know is that the most entertaining Stone Age family since the Flintstones returns to the big screen in The Croods: A New Age. This sequel to 2013 original is a spirited, fun-filled animated comedy suitable for almost all ages. The Croods couple (voices of Nicolas Cage and Catherine Keener) and their three children (voices of Emma Stone, Clark Duke, and Kailey Crawford) join a teenage boy (voice of Ryan Reynolds) on a perilous quest for a safe haven which they believe is going to be their ultimate home. They reach an oasis of tranquility and abundance run by an “evolved” Neanderthal family known as The Bettermans (the parents voiced by Peter Dinklage and Leslie Mann, their adolescent daughter by Kelly Marie Tran). Will this be a problem or will they live in perfect and peaceful harmony with each other?
While The Croods: A New Age was only released recently, did you know it took more than six years to make? The idea to have a sequel was originally scrapped. The team had problems back in 2016 but everything eventually fell into place and production started the year after. Do you want to know more about the movie before you watch it? Here are a few surprising facts about the family fun animated film:
• The longest wait for a sequel to a DreamWorks Animation film to date, being the first The Croods movie released in 2013. The film crew had to work from home because of the pandemic. As the movie is animated and most of the work can be done through computers, the studio didn’t pause the movie’s production and continued with its full operations with artists and filmmakers working from home.
• In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Emma Stone revealed the voice she used in the movie was based on Monica Geller from the TV show, Friends. She said she was unwittingly copying the cadence used by Courteney Cox who frequently said the line, “I know!”
• The treehouse of the Bettermans was referenced from the home of the Swiss Family Robinson, a film from the 60s about a family who built their home on a tree after getting washed up on a deserted island.
