We’re way past halfway through the year and the It bag competition for 2021 is becoming tougher. Pure feminine energy and sensuality with the freedom of expression is the message presented by Burberry in its new campaign featuring the Olympia Bag designed by Creative Director Riccardo Tisci.
The Olympia bag is Tisci’s tribute to Olympia London—a magnificent exhibition center in the Kensington district which dates back to 1886. It was also the venue for Burberry’s Autumn-Winter 2020 show, where the eponymous bag made its debut. Taking inspiration from the building’s architecture which features a soaring arched glass roof and a huge iron-framed dome window, Tisci gave the bag a sculpted crescent moon shape and a high arcing shoulder strap.
The bag is exquisitely made in the highest-quality leather, crafted in Italy, hand-shaped, and painted by artisan makers. The unique curved silhouette is hand-molded on a wooden block to create its structure. The bag features gold or palladium-plated hardware engraved with the Burberry logo, an emblem of timeless simplicity. Available in an assortment of classic colorways from warm tan, black, and burgundy to pale blue, warm sand, and deep orange in mini, small and medium sizes. The Olympia family has a range of iterations including a card case with a detachable strap in warm tan and black. A messenger bag, backpack, and tote also join the collection in neutral colorways.
To further drive home the message, Burberry tapped three luminaries of fashion and pop culture to channel the character of the Olympia in the bag’s global campaign—British singer-songwriter FKA Twigs, American model Kendall Jenner and British rapper-DJ Shygirl. Tisci said that when designing the bag, “I was thinking about creating the perfect form, something that could capture the essence of femininity. So, for the campaign, I wanted to celebrate three incredible women in my life who embody the power and beauty of feminine energy.“
The campaign was shot by photographers Inez and Vinoodh, and was styled by newly appointed Dazed & Confused editor-in-chief Ib Camara with make-up artist Kabuki Magic, and hairstylists Jimmy Paul and Lacy Redway. The idea behind the campaign was to strip things back and allow the women’s inner strength and feminine energy to speak for themselves.
