Later, you’ll enjoy a special kaiseki dinner with premium seasonal ingredients, served on a lacquer standing tray, similar to how daimyos received their meals.
On the second day, you’ll visit Matsushima Bay, one of Japan’s most beautiful seascapes. Take a train to Matsushima and enjoy the stunning seascape by boat. Book a tour to explore the region’s unique features. In the afternoon, try the salt-water eels, a popular summer dish, and learn about the region’s history, including the Zuiganji Temple, Entsuin Temple, and the Kanrantei Tea House. Explore the fascinating sites left by ruler and warlord Date Masamune. Return to Sendai for bar hopping in the back alleys and izakaya houses of Bunka-yokocho and Iroha-yokocho. After enjoying local food and drinks, spend the night at the Mitsui Garden Hotel in Sendai.
On Day 3, visit Hiraizumi, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Iwate Prefecture. Drive an hour to explore Chūson-ji Temple, Konjikidō, and Mōtsū-ji Temple, known for its beautiful garden. Enjoy wanko soba, a small plates tapas experience, and book a boat trip to the Geibikei Gorge for a breathtaking view of the pristine natural landscapes. Spend the evening in the picturesque mountain town of Ginzan Onsen.
On Day 4, drive to Yamagata and enjoy a leisurely lunch at Yamagata Sugi Beef. Hike to the stunning Yamadera Temple, a mountainside structure with scenic views. Check into the luxurious Hotel Metropolitan Yamagata for a comfortable stay. After visiting the temple, explore the vibrant neighborhoods of Yamagata. Enjoy a scenic hike and check in at the hotel.
On Day 5, you’ll return to Sendai and explore the city’s attractions, including temples, castles, and the unique Zunda-mochi delicacy. If you’re into shopping, visit Sendai Izumi Premium Outlets, Mitsui Outlet Park Sendai Port, or Sendai PARCO. The latter is the largest outlet mall in Tohoku and is 30 minutes from Sendai Station. If you’re looking for a closer option, Sendai PARCO is opposite Sendai Station. After a day of sightseeing, you’ll return to Tokyo Station on the Shinkansen.
This itinerary is just a slice of what you can experience in the Tohoku region. While five days is a good length for a trip, you’ll find that the natural beauty and fascinating history will keep you coming back to Tohoku for more.
